UNFPA ADVOCATES FOR PROMOTION OF FREE EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVE PILLS

Qacha’s Nek, Oct. 1 — During a workshop focused on the impacts of food insecurity on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), UNFPA Programme Officer for Adolescents and Youth, Ms. ‘Maseretse Ratia, emphasized the need to promote free emergency contraceptive pills provided at health facilities to prevent Early and Unintended Pregnancies (EUP).

She said the pill is more effective if taken soon as possible.

She highlighted EUP as a significant global public health issue, particularly for adolescent girls in Sub-Saharan Africa, where they face increased health risks and social challenges.

Ms. Ratia noted that 25 percent of unsafe abortions in the region involve adolescent girls, linking early marriage to rising pregnancy rates. . .
