Quthing, March 15 — The Quthing district’s target is to mark National Tree Planting Day on the theme ‘Forest and innovation’ with planting of more than 200 forestry at Ha Mabeleatlela in Tosing Community Council on Thursday this week.
In an interview with the Agency, the District Forester from department of Forestry and Environment Mr. Kananelo Thamae said the theme is intended to conscientise the community on how innovation can help to restore, protect, and manage use of forests sustainably.
He stated that technological, social, policy, institutional financial innovations are key to ensure the sustainable supply and use of the forest ecosystem.
Mr. Thamae said the department supports new ideas in exploring forest products and adapting to changing consumer preferences, adding that communities as individuals and groups are encouraged to plant trees for different purposes such as wood work, poles and paper under guidance from the department to achieve such projects.
He further appealed to different public groups, schools and individuals to mark the day at their respective areas and plant trees for environment protection and human wellbeing.
National Tree Planting Day is an annual event marked on March 21. Last year the district event in which public servants and school children planted more than 4 500 forestry trees was marked at Upper.
