Qacha’s Nek, Nov. 19 — Significant progress has been achieved in Preventing Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV in Qacha’s Nek, with robust healthcare measures and community support driving this success.
According to Mrs. ‘Masenate Makhasane-Ramone, the District Health Management Team (DHMT) Sexual and Reproductive Health Mentor, multi-sectoral interventions implemented since 2010 have drastically reduced the risk of HIV transmission during pregnancy, delivery and breastfeeding.
“It is mandatory for expectant mothers to undergo HIV testing, with those testing positive immediately starting Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) treatment to protect their babies,” said Mrs. Makhasane-Ramone.
She said health workers monitor treatment adherence closely and mothers are encouraged to deliver at health centers for optimal care. For HIV-negative women, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is prescribed throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding to minimize exposure risks. “Exposed infants are also given preventive medication to ensure their safety,” she added.
