MPS SET TO CHANGE DRESS CODE

Maseru, May 21 — Members of Parliament (MPs) are set to change their dress code but still maintain the standard of being honourable members according to Mr. Jane Lekunya who moved the motion for the members to adopt the report on behalf of the Speaker of the National Assembly.

Mr. Lekunya who is a Member of parliament for Mechachane constituency urged the House to resolve to adopt the Report of the Sessional Select Committee on the Standing Orders on Review of Standing Orders numbers 41, 52, 97 (3) and the Dress Code for House Sittings in his motion in the National Assembly on Tuesday.

He said the Committee has noted that the House dress code has only been defined in the Ruling of one of the former Speakers and that it is not elaborate enough thereby causing serious problems in the House, especially because the Ruling has also not prescribed the ladies dress code.

“It was also observed that many Parliaments are beginning to challenge the traditional Westminster dress code for the House sittings for various reasons,” he hinted. . .
