LOW BUDGET FOR INMATES HEALTH CARE- SEKAUTI

Maseru, July 22 — Lesotho Correctional Service (LCS) Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC) Health Services, Phoka Sekauti says the budget is always not enough to provide health care for inmates.

This he said when testifying before the Commission of Inquiry on the escape of inmates, after it was reported that some inmates, who were assaulted by LCS Recruits on December 22 last year, failed to access X rays or scans at private health facilities due to lack of finances because such services were unavailable at public hospitals.

SAC Sekauti said although it is the responsibility of the state to provide health services to inmates, LCS being a department under the government cannot afford to pay for private health services because they want cash on delivery which LCS does not have most of the time.

Asked if he had statistics on inmates who were told to go for x-ray after they were assaulted, he said he did not have statistics because he was not informed.
