Maseru, Feb. 25 — Following a recent ministerial site visit Mr. Seshophe Ramakoro, Communications Officer for Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA), addressed the ongoing impacts of the Katse Dam tunnel, which transfers water from Lesotho to South Africa.
This vital infrastructure has been undergoing essential maintenance to ensure its continued efficiency and durability.
In an interview with the Agency Mr. Ramakoro clarified that the current work on the tunnel involves addressing specific corrosion issues rather than a complete cleaning of the structure. Inspections conducted in 2019 revealed significant rust damage at several steel corners of the tunnel, necessitating immediate repairs to prevent further degradation.
“The repairs focus on sections identified during the inspection, it’s mainly the corners, where the tunnel turns, ensuring that water transfer capabilities remain intact. We are committed to providing a reliable water supply not just for South Africa but also for local communities that rely on the same water source,” Mr. Ramakoro stated. LS/TL
