Maseru, Feb. 25 – In a recent post-budget gala dinner, budget analyst Dr. Ratjomose Machema stirred discussion when he suggested that Lesotho’s primary competitive edge over South Africa lies in its access to cheap labour.
This remark prompted interventions from various officials, including the Principal Secretary of Labour and Employment Mr. Moshe Mosaase, who provided clarity on the issue, emphasizing a more nuanced perspective on investment and employment in the country.
In an interview with the agency, Mr. Mosaase explained that while lower wage costs may attract investors to Lesotho, the true value lies in the potential for local workers to acquire vital skills. “It’s not merely about paying lower wages,” he stated. “We have to consider the cost of living in Lesotho, which is actually lower than in South Africa. When investors come here, they bring skills and training that empower Basotho to ascend to higher positions, thereby enhancing our workforce.”
In his address, Mr Mosaase also highlighted the government’s intention to facilitate labour migration to countries like Germany, which is experiencing a high demand for skilled workers. . .
