Mokhotlong, Feb.21– The Integrated Catchment Management (ICM) Unit under the Ministry of Natural Resources will continue to rehabilitate selected sub-catchments in different parts of the country.
The National ICM Coordinator Mr. Makomoreng Fanana confirmed during a brief interview following a budget speech presentation for the next fiscal year 2025/26.
Mr. Fanana said there is need for rehabilitation of wetlands to ensure access to clean water while maintaining the state of Lesotho being known as the water tower of Southern Africa because it provides water to the region through its rivers.
He said that the Unit has changed its approach in implementing projects to enhance and increase the participation of communities in rehabilitation of the catchments.
He mentioned that communities are encouraged to establish catchment water teams in the villages and then draw plans on protection of the environment in an effort to promote sustainability.
On the other hand, the Range Management Officer, Mr. Sekants’i Pekile from Polihali Branch under the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority said rehabilitation of the catchments for Sehong-hong and Bafali rivers will start in the upcoming financial year. . .
