GOVERNMENT’S MOVE TO REGULATE INITIATION SCHOOL SPARKS MIXED REACTIONS

Qacha’s Nek, Feb.21 — The Basotho initiation school tradition, a significant cultural right of passage for boys transitioning into manhood, is set to undergo policy reforms as the government reviews its 2005 cultural policy according to the 2025/26 budget speech.

Mrs. ‘Mabohlokoa Rafatse, District Culture Officer from the Ministry of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, welcomed the move, stating that it will help establish clear rules and regulations for traditional doctors and initiation school leaders. “This step ensures that initiation schools operate within a structured framework that upholds both cultural values and the well-being of initiates,” she said.

A member of the Qacha’s Nek initiation group, Mr. Raleting Masoabi, acknowledged that this was the first time he had seen the government take steps to review initiation school policies.

He emphasized the importance of respecting and protecting Basotho cultural traditions.

Thabo Lekhooa, another interviewee, emphasized the need for the government to integrate healthcare support into the initiation school system. . .
