FAMILY SEEKS CLOSURE AFTER SENQU RIVER BOAT TRAGEDY

Qacha’s Nek, Jan. 19 — Six days after a tragic boat capsizing on the Senqu River, the remains of a 14-year-old boy are still missing.

The incident occurred on January 14 when an oar broke, causing the boat to lose control between Whitehill and Tebellong in Qacha’s Nek.

The tragedy claimed the life of a 32-year-old woman, while the driver and another boy survived.

Despite initial efforts to locate him, the boy’s remains have not been found, leaving his family devastated.

His grandfather, Tlhoriso Ts’oana, who is also a boatman, described the family’s anguish in an interview with the Agency.

“We are heartbroken. We’ve repeatedly raised concerns about the poor condition of these boats, which take in water easily, but no action has been taken. Finding his remains would bring us closure and help us heal,” he said.
