CROSS BORDER COOPERATION LEADS TO DRASTIC DROP IN STOCKTHEFT

Qacha’s Nek, Oct. 9 — Mr. Sekhonyane Makape, Chairman of the Matatiele Policing Committee Forum, known as Raohang Matatiele and Mount Fletcher, announced that stock theft has significantly decreased in both Qacha’s Nek and Matatiele due to their collaborative efforts.

He disclosed this during the public consultations of the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) on Wednesday, held in Tsoelike, Ha Matlali.

Matatiele and Qacha’sNek, which previously had the highest rates of stock theft, have seen this issue decline as if it had almost vanished. However, Mr. Makape noted that stock theft has not been fully eradicated due to porous borders between the two countries, which allow thieves to exploit the lack of protection for animals.

“If the police were to deploy more staff at these porous borders and increase protection, things would improve. Regular patrols in butcheries and auction sales are also crucial to ensure that animals are not stolen,” he said.
