Maseru, Mar. 30 — Members of the Roma community have cried foul following what they call unfair and discrepancy in the recruitment of labourers for the construction of St. Michael’s to Roma road.
The Agency has learned that the consensus between the Manonyane Community Council and the construction company was that the villagers will be employed as labourers. The community members of the affected areas that include St. Michael’s and all villages around Roma registered their names in October last year therefore the company was supposed to use such lists in consultation with the Council and Chiefs for recruitment.
Speaking in an interview, one of the villagers anonymously told the Agency that during the registration for recruitment, his name was among the first 10 which he said he believes he could have been among the group that is working now but he is not.
He said that they were informed that the construction company will employ them on a rotational basis but they are surprised that in these two weeks that the work has started they see workers who are not from St. Michael’s or any village in Roma. AT/TL
