Mohale’s Hoek, March 06 —- The Ministry of Energy and Meteorology in collaboration with that of Range and Soil Conservation, with the help of World Food Programme is currently staging climate change sensitisation workshop.
Climate Change Officer from Meteorological Services Mr. Theletsa Mpholle, noted that the objective of the workshop was to help address the effects of climate change in Lesotho through a project titled Improving Adaptive Capacity of Vulnerable and Food Insecure Populations in Lesotho, (IACOV)
Mr. Mpholle further articulated that IACOV programme is intended to amongst others, sensitize, educate and raise awareness about climate change among different sectors of the society, as well as interpreting and translating difficult messages and concepts of climate change, while ensuring that people fully understand what they need to do to reduce their vulnerability against climate change, (behavioural change).
On the other hand, IACOV Field Officer Mr. Ts’oanelo Oliphant indicated that the programme has three components of which the first one is focusing on institutions, systems and capacity building by focusing on empowering government’s institutions as ell as ensuring that machines are available so that the forecasting are made thoroughly in order to disseminate user friendly climate change information to communities.
Mr. Oliphant further noted that in component two of the project, communication strategy has been developed with the purpose of engaging everyone on the same level of understanding, whereby media will be capacitated on proper reporting on climate change, while component three will create a platform for people to make informed decision in
their day to day activities, after being presented with all necessary information.
IACOV is a programme which was launched in October 2020, with the inception of a workshop to address effects of climate change in Lesotho.
