CHILDREN’S PARLIAMENT URGE GOVERNMENT TO PRIORITIZE INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

Berea, Feb. 18 — As the 2025/2026 fiscal year budget speech presentation draws near, members of children’s parliament said they are hopeful that the budget projections will have allocations for inclusive education to cater for children with disabilities.

According to one of the 2023/2024 National Children’s Parliament representative Makeletso Mothakathi, children with disabilities still struggle to access education due to limited number of schools which cater for the needs of children with disability.

Mothakathi said although the Ministry of Education and Training always encourages schools to practice inclusive education, lack of proper infrastructure which suits the needs of children with disability is a major challenge as those on wheelchairs or those visually impaired cannot access the entire school premises.

She further said due to lack of schools for children with disabilities in other districts, they turn to be isolated from their beloved family members only to attend schools in districts such as Leribe, Maseru and others which have enabling infrastructure to cater for their different disabilities.
