Botha-Bothe, Aug. 28 — Christian Council of Lesotho has today launched a campaign against Gender Based violence with a slogan, ‘It is my responsibility to fight Gender based violence’.
Speaking at an event held today in the district, CCL Chairperson, Bishop Sekese said reports indicate that 95 percent of Basotho are christians and that means churches play a huge role in shaping the attitudes and perspectives of the people. He added that other behaviours in Basotho are shaped by traditional leaders because even if people are christians they still have the roots and norms which shape the way they do things.
“The slogan says that churches in Lesotho together with traditional leaders are starting to take the responsibility of fighting GBV through influencing behaviors and the norms of the people. We are going to collectively promote gender equality by interpreting religious text in a manner that perpetuates gender equality.
“With the help of GIZ and other development partners CCL is ready to roll the campaign working with other partners to come up with strategies to combat gender inequality. We believe that traditional leaders have the power to influence attitudes and change stereotypes. We will do this through the use of platforms we have such as churches and public gatherings,” he explained.
