FOREIGNERS IN PRISON FOR ILLEGAL ENTRANCE IN LESOTHO

Maseru, Feb. 23 – Three foreigners are among 60 inmates who are awaiting trial in the Correctional Institutions in the country.

Chief Officer Bokang Ramotena from the Paralegal Office in the Lesotho Correctional Service (LCS) told the Agency that these three foreigners are one woman from neighboring South Africa, a Nigerian man as well as a Pakistani man.

She said the trio is facing charges of illegal entrance into the country without proper documentation.

Chief Officer Ramotena also noted that there is a Mosotho woman who is facing charges for violating the Child Protection act.

She also mentioned that there are those awaiting trial for having been found on the wrong side of the Road Traffic Act (one), Common theft (two) and vandalism (two).

Again, she said there are 60 who are awaiting trial including three women and the rest are men.

Chief Officer Ramotena said 19 of them are facing murder charges, 10 common theft, sexual offences (9), assault (7), robbery (4), vandalism (3), and one each for house breaking, attempted murder, stock theft and vulgar language.

She also mentioned that there are 51 inmates who have been released and that they include a woman and two boys.

Chief Officer Ramotena said 20 had paid their bail, 11 were released on speed trial, four were released on their own recognizance, two have served their sentences, while nine had paid their fines including a woman.

There are a total of 74 inmates who were reported in all the Correctional institutions countrywide in the weekly reports starting on February 12 to 16 alone.

LCS, through its Paralegal office, releases weekly reports on the inmates reported in their institutions, crimes they are facing, those released from the institutions and their sentences as well as those awaiting trial.
