SAMIM Forces Commemorate World AIDS Day

Maseru, Dec. 08 — The Lesotho Contingent of the SADC Mission (SAMIM) deployed in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province, Nangade district joined forces with their United Republic of Tanzania (URT) counterparts and staff from Nangade District Hospital to observe World AIDS Day. 

The commemoration included a solemn march from Nangade Hospital to the Market Area, culminating in the laying of wreaths to honor the lives lost to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Tšeliso Serobanyane, the Commander of Lesotho Contingent Forward Operating Base, spoke on behalf of SAMIM forces in Nangade District and URT. He emphasized Africa’s prolonged struggle with the HIV/AIDS pandemic, mourning the loss of family members to this disease.

“We have witnessed the heartbreaking loss of our parents, siblings, and kin to HIV/AIDS,” expressed Lt Col Serobanyane. He urged the people of Nangade to heed the advice given by medical professionals, emphasizing the importance of preserving the invaluable gift of life.

Acknowledging the grave threat posed by HIV/AIDS, Mr. Joᾶo Atánasio Nanelo, the District Educational Director, urged the community to take proactive measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

“Through proper precautions and access to treatment, individuals living with HIV can lead prolonged and healthy lives,” Mr. Nanelo affirmed.

Expressing gratitude, Mr. Nanelo extended his thanks to the SAMIM Forces for their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the people of Nangade. 

He urged the community to remain vigilant, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to terrorism, and stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between the community and SAMIM Forces to combat this threat.
