SECTORS DISSATISFIED ABOUT INCREMENT OF WORKING HOURS

Maseru, Mar. 13 — Public and private sectors have expressed dissatisfaction regarding the recently tabled Labour Code Bill 2024 which stipulates that working hours will increase from 180 hours to 195 hours per month.

Speaking in an interview, Construction, Mining, Quarrying and Allied Workers Union (CMQ) Secretary General Mr. Robert Mokhahlane said that this means that workers will be working more hours which might result in no overtime and less money.

He said that workers make money through overtime hours saying that with extended hours they will not be able to make more money especially because it is only hours extending while salaries and wages remain the same.

“We need working hours to still be 180 because with the increased working hours, workers are going to suffer a lot yet they will be working for long hours with no money. In months like February it will be difficult for workers to cover 196 hours and that would mean a cut on their salaries or wages,” he said.
